There's no surprises here either, it sounds exactly how you would expect it to. Each collaborator putting their unique sound on the table and it weaves together quite perfectly. Fans already showing their support as it sold out on pre sale before anyone had even heard it! Jamie xx remixes the whole Gil Scott-Heron 'We're new Here'. Everybody knows about this album and everyone knows its gonna be a great listen. The Deluxe Box set has especially caught my eye, as you can see from the image it looks pretty smooth. Purpose built record box with die cut sleeves, 2 x 180 gram coloured vinyl, one record with the full album and the second with all the instrumentals, CD digital copies of the same, and two limited art prints. All this for £25, not bad.

The album speaks for itself, so just gonna leave you with the closing track which is a synth disco number; Jamie twisting Gil's crackling voice between piano stabs and those famous echoing guitars that defined The xx's LP.........

I recently purchased this book which shows an amazing portrayal of Joy Division through an extensive series of mostly unseen photographs by photographer Kevin Cummins. A 208 page hardback book covering live performances, practices and general downtime with the band. Cummins became big in the late 70s photographing musicians such as David Bowie, Patti Smith, and The Sex Pistols, going on to a 25 year career for NME magazine for which he was chief photographer. The iconic images are also accompanied with concert tickets, unreleased record sleeves, fan club badges, and Factory Records flyers. Also included are original lyrics from notebooks written by Ian.

As I expected its fucking amazing, housey beats and some nice down tempo bits all with smooth, smooth as hell vocals, cant really ask for anything better to dance to. Nice one to Andy and Kim for totally killing it on this record!!

Its not very often a band puts together an album as seamless as it is, a pure body of work, solely made by themselves and totally for themselves. The world deserves to hear what they have created and they deserve to show us.

The following track is a solo track from beat maker Jamie xx, entitled Far Nearer, its being released on Numbers Records soon. Sounds a bit like if Burial were a steal band....enjoy....

This next track is a mindblowingly good Four Tet remix of The xx- VCR. Starting out with the classic Four Tet shuffling drum rhythms with Romy and Oliver's soft ghostly vocals overlayed. Then at 2.57 a slightly speedier VCR melody kicks in and your ears prick up as it starts rolling from this point, gently growing and swirling you into dreamland. Amazing track....

Up next is a remix of a remix of a cover (complicated? its not). The xx remix of Florence's cover of The Source and Candi Staton's '86 disco track gets remixed by The Very Best. It has been done amazingly well keeping the xx version fully alive but adding vocal harmonies, and tropical percussion. All together very tasty....

Been quiet on the blogging front as summer was too much fun. Lots of time spent riding bikes and playing in parks, out drinking and partying till late every night. This left very little time for updates, but now its time to start over as the nights draw in and I spend an increasing amount of time on the net.

This awesome remix/tribute to Arnold Schwarzenegger, made by Luke Million, (keys player in The Swiss) with the help of an edit of the Original track by ATBC. The original track coming from Arnolds Total Body Workout LP released in the early 80s. (Yes he had his own work out LP- Discogs)

Anyway enough background bullshit, this tune is a dirty synth disco, groove laden dancer. When Arnold starts instructing its just ridiculous. Check it out!

James Holden Releases DJ-Kicks Comp

Border Community head honcho James Holden has been the next in line to release a compilation in the DJ-Kicks series.

In true Holden style he oozes seamlessly through krautrock, cosmic disco, 80's new wave, electronica and techno, in a way only James Holden can.

If you were lucky enough to go to the launch party last friday at Village Underground you would have witnessed a mindblowing evening of fun with the music running over till 8am! Unfortunatly I was in Greece and missed out but reports have made me very jealous.

Back to the mix, Holden has made a new tune exclusively for the mix which is is first bit of new material since 2006! It sounds sweet as hell, check it out below:

I don't really follow straight up indie bands anymore but something about Chapel Club rings loud and takes me back to my early days of watching bands like The Stills or British Sea Power.

And of course loving every minute.

Those days have passed now but this band are doing it and doing it very well. Chapel Club wear thier influences on their sleeves but with a new and intriguing twist. If you got a moment go check them at Village Underground (an amazing new venue, if you've been you'll know- moodily lit epic railway arches) on May 27th to experience the live show.

At last! the second Hercules and Love Affair album has been finished. The follow up to the self titled first album is yet to be named but will see a release in September this year. Some massive tunes such as 'Blind' and 'You Belong' were the creations of Andy Butler and his Love Affair crew way back in March '08, so its been a long wait!

The only glimse of new material was the housy banger 'I can't Wait' which appeared on the Sidetracked mix that came out last year. Kim Ann Foxman making the dance floor go crazy with that piercing vocal and transporting you back in time.

Gavin Russom and His Crystal Ark

The Crystal Ark is Gavin Russom's newest monika. His first release with this new solo project, 12' 'The City Never Sleeps', is being put out by super label DFA.

Clocking in at 12.20mins its a DFA journey to remember. With inspiration coming from Russom's recent trip to Brazil, he puts his own spin on Brazilian rave sounds. The classic sounds of DFA are all over this, hissing cymbals, handclaps, shuffling percussion and sonic impulses. They all drive the song along, pulsing like a heart. A guest vocal from Viva Ruiz speaks to you in a sexualy charged foreign tongue, making you sweat as the beat climbes to a pulsating noise. Gavin replies with his vocal, repeating 'you want some more...you want some more', as the song winds away from its teased climax, still echoing with driving percussion and sonic synths.

On the flip side is the instrumental but the vocal cannot be beaten.

Four Tet- Sing 12"

The latest track from Four Tet's recent album to enjoy the single treatment is 'Sing'. The 12" and digital release gives us the aural pleasure of an extended mix and a rather good remix by man of the moment Floating Points.

Personally not one of my fav tracks (coming in after my favorite song on the album is always gonna be tricky business) but this extended mix has the intro the song needs and misses on the album. Easing you in slowly with a washy vocal and 4x4 beat before the melody kicks in hard. Then its on the home straight for 7 minutes!

Then its the Floating Points remix on the flip side, clocking it at nearly 14 minutes its quite an awesome ride you're in for here. Every last cent of quality is sucked out of the original and repacked, Floating Points style. Like a journey through a distant galaxy, echoing vocals, stabbing synths and the beat not surfacing till 7 minutes in, definatly giving the original a run for its money. Then the outro wouldn't go a miss on a Vangelis soundtrack with squashy and shooting synths producing an epic soundscape. This is a big remix.

I once heard James Murphy was the hardest working producer in the industry. I think it true.

Aside from working on the new LCD album which is in its final mastering stages (actually probably all finished by now) Murphy has been working on the soundtrack to Noah Baumbach's film Greenberg. It features 6 songs credited to James and one credited to LCD, these songs are not half arsed instrumentals either, all brand new tracks written specifically for the movie with vocals! but sounding more like Pink Floyd than disco punk, not a bad thing of course. Released 23 march 2010.

End of last year Rustie played in Paris at the WARP/ED night. A killer lineup from both Warp and Ed Banger camps, one would expect nothing less from such sick labels really.

Here we have a mix Rustie put together exclusivly for the WARP/ED Paris show. Its a huge party mix showing his knowledge back into the depths of the 80s with synths and snares dominating the airwaves. For the first 45 mins, taking in disco, italo, electro, hip hop, pop, and styles in between. For the Last 15 he moves into a live set playing his own trademark tunes. Julian Casablancas is releasing his debut solo album, 'Phrazes for the Young', on the 19th October. Listening to this surprisingly good single, I'm suddenly getting excited about this album as it breathes new life into that age old indie scene which The Strokes seamed to single handidly create all that time ago back in 2001. The lead single is called 11th Dimension and its pretty cool with a groovy synth line, yes synth, i know, not what I was expecting either. It kinda catches you off guard but then his trade mark raw vocal comes in and fits seamlessly like The Strokes always had a synth player. Another good point to make here is that the artwork looks totally sick! it's got that Bowie 'Spiders from Mars' feel about it but with a modern twist. The pictures above were created using Polanoid, which is an application that turns a digital picture into a polaroid version. Apply the classic saturation, contrast and famous white border to any photo on your hard drive. This app has some nice features too, you can actually watch your polaroid develop on your screen in real time just like the real thing. It also has the exact sound of the shutter/image eject motor from a real polaroid camera that sounds when you process an image. Real geeky but i love that noise!

It can never beat holding a real polaroid in your hand but its pretty cool to play with and gives some nice results that even include the odd finger print!

Subliminal Messaging

Derren Brown and his reversed advert for his new show that has been on Channel 4 for about a week now is pretty intriguing. Watching it in reverse so he speaks forward only makes it more baffling. Watch how some objects are moving forward whilst others are moving backwards, there is definitely some clever editing going on here. As for the speaking I think it was mouthed whilst walking and then dubbed over the top in the edit, because no one can speak that perfectly in reverse. Or I was thinking it could have been shot in reverse really slowly so that Derren can walk through the cars without getting hit, then sped up to real time and reversed. Maybe some blue screen work has been done to make the illusion that he is amongst fast speeding traffic. Anyway it all very confusing, here is the advert reversed:

As for the subliminal messages, there are so many I nearly lost count. Red and Black are featured very heavily throughout the whole advert, red&black is written on the lorry at the start, the posters are all red and black, the red balloon, red phone box, a number of the cars are red and black. This may have something to do with the large billboard poster which reads retsehcnamdetinu.com (manchesterunited.com) Manchester United play in red and black. An actual site has been made for retsehcnamdetinu.com which gives a link to a site where you can watch the trailer again. Maybe he will make united loose a match, or make a player freeze on the pitch as an article on the site suggests. Also the pizza advert in the bus stop that reads stucktomysofa.com has been made into a site that links to the trailer. Maybe Derren is going to make viewers that watch the show actually freeze to their sofa!

The lottery is also featured pretty heavily with the numbers on the post, the bus with a simular logo and slogan the lottery uses. Maybe he's gonna steal some money from them like the betting scam he did at the dogs that time.

When he mentions 'security systems' he takes a hard look at the little girls balloon with the logo of the bird on it, Barclays Bank logo maybe? and a man in a suit calls a taxi at this point too, could be a banker? maybe he's going to break some bank systems or something because he also says 'if you know where to look'.

Basically it is an amazing advert as it has grabbed lots of attention. All of the messages probably don't even actually mean anything, they're just there to build hype about the show and get people talking, after all that is the goal of an advert.

the juan maclean new album was released yesterday!

the 14 of april saw the release of 10 new juan maclean songs in the shape of his new album 'the future will come'. its been a long time coming since we were first mesmerized by tracks such as 'give me every little thing' in 2005 when 'less than human' was released on the new york hipster dfa label.

the first single from the new album 'one day' is a very human league sounding track (this similarity can be found in a few tracks) with trading vocals and synths between john maclean and new band mate nancy whang (lcd soundsystem synth player) the comparison is not a bad thing as john listened to dare-era human league for preparation. always a good starting point really.

other helpful hands on the album came from both parts of dfa disco duo holy ghost, nick millhiser and alex frankel. jerry fuchs, drummer from !!!, also handed over his time to help. so basically they have made a sweet album of beautiful synths and layered vocals with nice dollop of ny disco beats. what more could you ask for! go listen to it now bitches!!

Right then, this is gonna be a monster tune when it come out in a few weeks time. The song is called 'In For The Kill' and the artist is La Roux but its the massive Skream remix that were talking about. Skream being one of dubsteps finest turns the tune into a 3am hands in the air, lighters up, vocal dream, before turning into a rave-tastic sure set anthem.

No Mans Land

A bleak blanket of desolation has entrenched our Isles, feared by the many residents of the other upper nothern hemishere as snow blindness it has now driven our fellow men into unrivalled dementia. No longer does this routine weather front bring about recollections of children sledding, snowball fights and the obligitary day off school; it now signals a deranged new ideology upheld by a united media front. Yes my fellow citizens we must now fear the dreaded snow blitz and listen to a thrawting siren urging us to throw in the towel. Britain is a nation left in despair by 3 inches of frozen water, a once functional supermarket car park now coined No Mans Land by its customers fearful to brave the dreaded black ice. Umong the fairer minded people of Middlesex motorists have signalled the begginings of this madness by willingly driving there cars into walls; other cars and in some cases people. I call on our citzens to repuduate this idea embrace the snow and by all means possible resist the temptation to listen to the idiot box for information.

Hot Hot Hot

Natasha kahn of Bat For Lashes has been working on her new album to follow up from her amazing first album Fur and Gold (2007 Mercury Music Prize nominated). She has been working on it for the last 12 months and the time is nearly here to listen to her new magical masterpieces.

The Album titled Two Suns explores duality within Natasha's personality and the world she sees. The introduction of her alter ego Pearl, a destructive femme fatale character, shows an opposite side to Natasha's spiritual personality. The album has guest appearances from Scott Walker and Yeasayer and is released on April 6th on Astralwerks.

JIMMY GOT THE DROP

on this one before anyone I know. When The Knife got Pitchfork album of the year with Silent Shout in 2006, even the flagbearers of synth-wave-is-dead-again timecalling shit their pants and braced for the third coming of Swedish boy-girl defeat.

So where was it?

Well, nothing really happened. There was a lame deluxe-ed re-release, cha-ching. But uh-oh, all is forgiven, we had news that Karin Dreijer Andersson spent the last two years smoking cigarettes and down-tuning her vocoder for her new project, Fever Ray.

Lets drop some sloppy comparisons, because in this case, its, uh, true. Her album is The Knife, but with some low-guitar drone. The vocals are even scarier (less high-notes) and the subject-matter is, well, there's a track called 'Now's the only time I know' and a track called 'Coconut'.
